John Landis Mason was awarded patent #22186, issued on November 30, 1858 by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for an improvement in screw-neck bottles and there were born the first screw capped Mason jars. They were produced at numerous factories, possibly over a hundred or more, for about 60 years. The 1858s appear as both mold blown specimens, with a ground top, and Automatic Bottle Machine or ABM made jars, both of which will be found in this photo album. The midget jars have their own album so all 1858 midget jars can be found in that album.
